During the Salem witch trials, the residents of Salem, Massachusetts relied primarily on spiritual beliefs and rumors. Although we understand now that their actions were misguided, at the time, that was their only basis for decision-making. Today, although we still consider eyewitness accounts, we tend to be more skeptical and give preference to solid evidence; practices like swearing to tell the truth on the Bible and the criminalization of perjury have increased the reliability of such testimonies.
