What opposing beliefs do Antigone and Creon represent in Sophocles’s Antigone?

In Sophocles’s Antigone, the conflicting viewpoints embodied by Antigone and Creon are devotion to family versus duty to the state.

Antigone performed Polynieces’ burial because she believed the family should carry out funeral rites after death. Creon refused to allow Polynices a proper burial, seeing him as a traitor. As king of Thebes, Creon is proud and inflexible; he fixates on civil law and cannot tolerate disobedience. He is obstinate, arrogant, and trusts only his own judgments. The audience clearly knows Antigone buried Polynieces, while the other characters remain unaware of this.
