Paru-Parong bukid is a well-known Filipino folk song, which was adapted from "Mariposa Bella," a Filipino song in Spanish that dates back to the 1890s.
The composition of "Mariposa Bella" occurred during the American invasion of the Philippines, at which point Spanish-speaking Filipinos began to incorporate the song.
In 1938, "Mariposa Bella" faded into obscurity once "Paru-Parong Bukid" was introduced as part of a film soundtrack with the same title. Felipe De Leon created the Tagalog version.
Within popular culture, a film named Paroparong Bukid was produced by Sampaguita Pictures in 1938, featuring Rudy Concepcion, utilizing the folk song Paru-Parong Bukid as its soundtrack.
Another romance film titled Paroparong Bukid with stars such as Gloria Romero, Luis Gonzales, and Dolphy was released by the same film company in 1958.
In 1962, Guillermo Gómez Rivera released an LP called Nostalgia Filipina, which featured the original Spanish song "Mariposa Bella."
