Sir William Gerald Golding, born on September 19, 1911, passed away on June 19, 1993. This British author was renowned for his literary contributions, particularly his novel Lord of the Flies. He received the Nobel Prize in Literature and was honored with the Booker Prize for fiction in 1980 for Rites of Passage, the first installment of his sea trilogy named To the Ends of the Earth.

In 1988, Golding was knighted and he became a member of the Royal Society of Literature. In 2008, The Times positioned him third on their list of "The 50 greatest British writers since 1945." The novel being discussed here is The Inheritors.

The Inheritors is a prehistoric fiction narrative published in 1955 by William Golding, who is chiefly known for Lord of the Flies. It details the extinction of one of the final tribes of Neanderthals due to the actions of the more evolved Homo sapiens.

Madeline’s response to Emil’s suggestion that she apologize to her uncle and seek his guidance indicates:

She suggests he is not genuinely her uncle.
