In 1838, the courts abolished Indian autonomy, forcing Indian tribes to vacate the southeastern United States. While the Potawatomi, Miami, Shawnee, and Seminole remained in North Carolina's hills, the Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, and Creek relocated westward.
