Northfield is a model city in Westport County. Crime rates have dropped 28% in the last five years, and new business development

has increased by 42% over the same period. There also has been significant growth in public services with the opening of our new Northfield Community Center and the current construction of Northfield Park. Unfortunately, Proposition S now threatens to undo all that Northfield has accomplished in recent years. Proposition S intends to fund public services throughout Westport County by taking 8.25% of all tax revenues away from city governments. Although most people believe that more public services are needed, Proposition S would only burden Northfield and other cities with strong local governments and business-friendly policies. These city governments would be required to pay for public services in areas where local politicians have failed to find a way to fund their own projects. Given the strength of Northfield’s economy, approximately $12.3 million dollars of tax revenue would be redirected toward county projects. Without this money in Northfield’s budget, many programs at our new community center will have to be cut. This would affect more than 40,000 citizens of Northfield, as well as 25,000 people who live outside our city and use the community center on a regular basis. The construction of Northfield Park, which also would be open to all county residents, would probably have to be put on hold. I am proud to join my fellow residents of Northfield in urging all citizens of Westport County to vote No on Proposition S in the upcoming election. What is good for Northfield is good for all of Westport County. Mr. Nelson Woo President of the Northfield City Council Which sentence in the letter addresses the opposing viewpoint? The construction of Northfield Park, which also would be open to all county residents, would probably have to be put on hold. What is good for Northfield is good for all of Westport County. Without this money in Northfield’s budget, many programs at our new community center will have to be cut. Although most people believe that more public services are needed, Proposition S would only burden Northfield and other cities with strong local governments and business-friendly policies. Naddik [7168]

This excerpt revolves around the concept of long acquaintance without meaningful conversations, suggesting the importance of expressing one’s feelings. "It helps you to let off steam."

Peter. I guess you miss your friends and everything.

Anne. It's not just that... (She pauses, gazing up at him for a moment.) Isn't it amusing, you and I? We’ve been in each other's presence for nearly a year and a half, yet this marks our first real dialogue. Having someone to converse with is really beneficial, wouldn’t you agree? It indeed helps to release pent-up emotions. (continued)

Peter (Approaching the door). Whenever you need to vent, you can always come to my room.

Anne (Following him). I can generate quite a bit of steam. You might want to choose your words carefully.

Peter. That’s fine by me.

Anne. Are you serious about that?

Peter. I did say it, right?

Which techniques does President Reagan use in this
ddd [7064]

Complete Question:

Consider the excerpt from President Ronald Reagan’s address on the eve of the 1980 presidential election. I understand that the fate of America’s 52 hostages weighs heavily on our minds tonight. Like you, my greatest desire is for their safe return—that they be reunited with their families after a prolonged year of captivity. Once they are back, we will redirect our focus to the issues that will shape the direction of America for the next four years. A child born this year will start adulthood in the 21st century. What type of nation, what legacy will we create for these young individuals who will experience America’s third century as a country? Which techniques are employed by President Reagan in this excerpt? Choose three options.

pathos

ethos

shift

understatement

overstatement

Answer:

The techniques identified in President Reagan's excerpt include Pathos, Ethos, and Overstatement.

Explanation:

When pathos is utilized in discourse, it aims to evoke sympathy regarding the situation described. President Reagan referred to the 52 hostages, highlighting their plight.

A shift in speech serves to alter time perspectives, allowing the audience to navigate through time per the content of the excerpt.

In this case, President Reagan transitions from the present to a future viewpoint. Overstatement involves exaggeration. This was evident in President Reagan’s remarks concerning the safety of the hostages.
