The Civil War in 1864, which devastated much of Atlanta, established it as Georgia's busiest city. This conflict had significant repercussions in Atlanta, with many properties destroyed. Following the war, the Federal government designated Atlanta as the "Third Military District" to oversee Georgia and other states while facilitating the reconstruction of major infrastructure.
