When an author provides descriptions, it helps readers picture events or situations vividly. For instance, Equiano’s depiction of the fish flying and leaping across the ship enables readers to imagine the scene clearly. This draws them deeper into the story and provides insight into the setting, making the excerpt more engaging.

Throughout this passage, I encountered flying fish for the first time, which amazed me greatly. They repeatedly soared over the ship, with many landing on the deck. Additionally, I witnessed the quadrant’s function for the first time. Previously, I had often noticed sailors making measurements with it, but I couldn’t understand its purpose. Eventually, they saw my astonishment and, aiming both to delight my curiosity and increase my surprise, allowed me to look through it one day. The clouds appeared as land which vanished as we moved, heightening my marvel. This convinced me more strongly that I was in a different world, surrounded by marvels and magic.

seraphim [2596]

"A Day in the Country" tells the tale of Terenty, a middle-aged man without a home who makes his living as a cobbler. He meets Fyokla, a young beggar girl of six, who seeks his assistance in helping her cousin Danilka free his hand from a tree hole.

Feeling sentimental over his past, Terenty decides to assist the kids, as they remind him of his own childhood. He likely believes that he could have used help back then, which prompts him to offer his support to these homeless children.
