Write one paragraph comparing the memoir and the article. Compare how the writers present similar ideas to the reader. Include e

vidence from the text to support your comparison.
By the time my mother married my father, however, she knew all about the true nature of the dictatorship. Thousands had lost their lives in failed attempts to return the country to democracy. Family friends, whom she had assumed had dropped away of their own accord, turned out to have been disappeared. My father had been lucky. As a young man, he had narrowly escaped to Canada after the plot he had participated in as a student failed. This was to be the first of two escapes. That same year, 1937, El Generalísimo ordered the overnight slaughter of some eighteen thousand Haitians, who had come across the border to work on sugarcane plantations for slave wages. It was from my father that my mother learned why Trujillo hated blacks with such a vengeance, how he disguised his own Haitian ancestry, how he lightened his skin with makeup.

–“A Genetics of Justice,”
Julia Alvarez

The method his soldiers used in 1937 to try to identify those who would be killed was cruelly unique. When confronting someone in the lands along the border with Haiti, they would hold up a sprig of parsley and ask what it was. If the person responded by trilling the "r" in perejil (Spanish for parsley), he would be free to go. Anyone who didn't trill the "r" was thought to be a Haitian Creole speaker—and was likely to be killed.

Julia’s memoir recounts her family’s experiences as personal stories, whereas Mark’s article relays events from an unidentified perspective. Both authors tackle the harsh treatment of Haitians in territories where they are unwelcome. Additionally, Julia provides the motive behind the Haitian killings—her family’s account revealing the ruler’s animosity—while Mark focuses on the brutal tactic used to identify victims, specifically testing pronunciation of "perejil" to distinguish Haitians from others.

Flura [2571]

Answer:

As the end of the tax year approaches on April 6th, time is running out for those interested in "Help to Buy" ISAs. The real question is: where is the ideal spot to invest your hard-earned cash? If you prefer immediate access to your funds, the interest rate might only be 1.5%. However, committing your savings for two years could yield rates up to 2.28%. Financial advisor Dave Rubin advises: "If you have some money to invest, even a small amount, it's crucial to keep the taxman from taking a slice of your interest if you want to achieve optimal long-term gains."

Explanation:

As the end of the tax year approaches on April 6th,

This is the first instance where a colon was incorrectly used, and it should have been replaced with a comma.

However, the question remains:

This is another moment where a colon was added properly after initially being absent.

As financial advisor Dave Rubin advises:

This is the third occurrence where a colon was meant to be added but was initially missing.

What is a colon (:) ?

A colon serves as a punctuation mark that separates two independent clauses with the second clause elaborating on the first. It can also introduce lists.

I need a preamble of a story that ends with “That experience will linger on my mind for a long time”.
Lady bird [2775]

Answer:

Explanation:

I departed from my house at 7 am, aiming to reach the train station. I was anxious about being tardy on my first workday. Fortunately, I caught a bus to the station right on schedule. After purchasing my ticket, I took a seat, eager for the train to depart. Although it only took moments, my nervousness made it feel like an eternity.

As the train honked loudly, we began to move. I pulled out my phone to text my partner in an attempt to ease my anxiety. He responded by trying to soothe my nerves. I was bewildered by my restlessness; the adrenaline rush was overwhelming. I asked if I could video call him, and he agreed. If my memory serves correctly, he was in the midst of giving me compliments when I heard a startling noise. Suddenly, my phone tumbled to the floor.

There was a cacophony of screams around me, and my head felt heavy; I struggled to concentrate while I found myself lying in an odd position. Peering out the window, I saw only the sky. It didn't click right away, but once I gazed outside amidst the turmoil inside the cabin, it all fell into place.

The train had indeed derailed!
