In the poem "We Wear the Mask," Paul Laurence Dunbar uses a relatively structured rhyme scheme in his depiction of a community p

utting up a facade and pretending to be something else. Is there a time in which you acted in a way that was contrary to your own feelings? Perhaps you hoped to live up to the way others wanted to see you. Perhaps you did something that you weren’t comfortable doing in order to fit in.
Write a poem describing what you did and how you felt. Experiment with the rhyme scheme in your poem, just as modern poets did. After your poem, include a brief explanation of the rhyme scheme, structure, and literary devices that you used.

Below is a poem example along with an analysis:

In this Queens vicinity,

I observe the local teens

playing without a worry,

While I sit quietly and ponder.

I don’t engage in basketball

because of my short stature.

They smartly maneuver and advance,

As I remain a distant watcher.

Truthfully, I prefer to compose

rather than shoot, evade, and confront.

I made the choice to participate with them today,

curious about their reaction

With no expertise or training,

just seeking excitement,

And thus they dismissed my presence,

not allowing me to express myself.

Just because I’m not of towering height

doesn’t imply I can’t join in!

In any case, I would rather compose

than shoot, dodge, and confront.

This piece follows a fixed end rhyme pattern, aabb ccdd ee. Additionally, there’s a consistent format. The first two stanzas contain four lines each, with the third having two lines, and the fourth and fifth stanzas consisting of four lines, while the sixth contains two lines. Some thoughts are carried over from one line to the next with enjambment. Moreover, the repetition in the third stanza, which also appears in the sixth, emphasizes the speaker’s refusal to feel upset about being left out.

Response:

Stifled shout

A voice muted by its own force

The will usurped

And anxiety reaching

Life seems overtly obvious

Yet silent as a suffocating cry.

Unwarranted shame

Since no justification is found

I possess only inadequacy

And endure loneliness.

Naddik [7538]
