Denise Levertov (1923-1997) was an American poet and activist against war. She believed it was her duty to highlight the unfairness of the Vietnam War and often shared her poetry during protests she joined. The two poems referenced here reflect aspects of the USA's involvement in the conflict in Southeast Asia. In "Overhead in Southeast Asia," she wrote:

"White phosphorus, white phosphorus, mechanical snow, where are you falling?" "I am falling impartially on roads and roofs, on bamboo thickets, on people."

This verse powerfully condemns the horrors of chemical warfare. Similarly, in "Life at War," she expressed the human suffering in comparable terms:

"The disasters numb within us, caught in the chest, rolling in the brain like pebbles. the feeling resembles lumps of raw dough..."

Levertov conveyed her anti-war stance through her poetry, leaving readers with an undeniable impression that the conflict was both brutal and pointless.

Consider how Mrs. Whitaker is characterized in the story. What conclusions can you make about how she lives her life? Support yo
Naddik [7538]

Answer and Explanation:

In Neil Gaiman's "Chivalry", Mrs. Whitaker is portrayed as someone leading a rather uneventful life. As a retired widow living alone, she displays kindness towards her acquaintances.

Despite her mundane routine suggesting dullness, Mrs. Whitaker is, in fact, quite intriguing and smart, having experienced much in her past, but currently opting for a peaceful existence, which might appear monotonous to the audience.
